A study done at the University of Southern California and published in Cell Metabolism earlier this year showed that a diet high in animal protein was linked to increased mortality, increased cancer and increased diabetes.
The increased risks were equal to those of smoking a half pack of cigarettes a day.
That’s right, eating high levels of animal protein was as bad for patients under age 65 as smoking was. The study tried to find a silver lining for meat and dairy by stating that over age 65 a high protein diet was linked to increased survival, but this was not a uniform finding. Death from diabetes increased even after age 65.
Let’s examine the findings point by point:
Death from all causes was increased by 74% in the high animal protein group.
Death from cancer was increased 400% in the high animal protein group.
Death from diabetes was increased 500% in the high animal protein group.
Again this backs up previous studies done in 2010, 2012 and 2013 that showed increased death rates with high protein, low carbohydrate diets.
Whether you are over or under age 65, your body doesn’t require the high leucine or methionine levels associated with animal protein.
At this point in 2014, any medical professional who is recommending a low carbohydrate, high protein diet to their patients at any age should seriously consider the risks, since there are no appreciable long-term benefits.
Any other product that increased cancer rates by fourfold would be removed from the market.
The good news is, nobody needs to take any regulatory action for you to remove these items from your own personal diet. You can do it yourself!
